Book Competition

We are going to be writing some book reviews for a competition next term. However, to do this we all need to have read some of the books that we are going to review.
Therefore, we now have a large pile of books waiting to be checked out and read carefully.
For the moment, all you need to do is sign out one of the books and read the whole story. (I will explain how we will check them out). If you want to keep any notes while you read about the characters, settings, plot, your feelings about the book, its style etc, that would would be really useful for your future review.

Our reviews will then be shared with other schools.

Book review of billionaire Boy by David Walliams
This story follows a 12 year old boy who is very rich he is so rich his houses can be seen from out of space. Joe Spud, who is a billionaire, goes to the best and most expensive school in the world. However, he has no friend’s people make fun of him because his dad made his fortune of making toilet roll called “bum Fresh.” He wants to move to a new school in a local area thus he dose he wants to move because he was bullied. Someone was paid to lose a race so he did not come last that he did not know. He tries to buy his way out of all of his situations like for bullies and friends. This did not work. Joe’s dad paid Lauren to be his fiend. He tries to kiss her and she tells him the truth and he asked his dad it was true so he ran away.

I liked the bit when he drove his two million pound formula one car into the tree and he was stuck it was so funny it made me laugh everyone who likes humorous story’s would like it. What you could learn from this book is that if you are rich do not take advantage of your money to try and dig yourself out of trouble. Some of the things that happened is when he falls out with his dad and runs away this was very sad.

I would recommend this story to anyone who likes humour because David Walliams is a comedian and this means that he can be very funny in his books. Furthermore, he dose in all of the books he writes. This book is not suited to people that are under 10 but not good for 14 anywhere in-between is fine.

Book review – Billionaire boy by David Walliams.

12 year – old, Joe Spud couldn’t be more spoiled.
He gets everything he wants and still is never happy! Joe’s house is so big, it can be seen from space! Literally, humongous. Joe’s dad had been making a new brand of toilet paper named Bum Fresh! Joe had no friends, but one day things changed! One day Lauren got paid to lose the race by Joe’s dad! Joe tried to kiss Lauren but she told the truth and ran away! Will he go back to his house to face his farther?

This story contains happiness also the story is a little heart-warming!
The funny things are: Joe drives in to a tree in his race car, He had lived in his house for 2 years and he still hadn’t explored it all. ( It is really big!)
The sad parts are: Joe and his farther fall out, Joe runs away because of his farther!
My favourite part was at the start where it tells you everything he has because you can compare yourself to Joe!

I recommend this story because it has lots of humour and it will be a good book to read when you are feeling sad . It will cheer you up! This book is more suited for year 5 and 6 because it has some good words that might not make sense to the little ones!

Book review of Billionaire Boy by David Williams

The Billionaire Boy Joe Spud was a 12 year old boy who lived with his dad.
Mr Spud (his dad) who worked on Bum Fresh, a selling brand of toilet roll.
They had a mansion with about 17 or even 20 rooms and Joe got whatever he liked whenever he wanted. Mr Spud found a girl friend called Sapphire and all she wanted was money and expensive brands like Rimmel London lipstick and a £150 pound T-shirt, even a bag carrier, servant and a princess carriage! Mr Spud was fooled and bought her whatever she liked. (Like he did with Joe) But Joe knew that he was being fooled but Mr Spud wouldn’t listen to him!
There is also a girl in this story named Lauren, she was paid by Mr Spud to be Joes friend but Joe did not know that his father was paying her about £700 pound a hour. He shortly falls in love with her and tries to kiss her but before he could she told him the truth and ran back to her house and never returned. Joe knew what was going on and asked his father why he had did that he said “I thought you needed a friend because that Bob boy was being nasty because of nothing!” But Joe was still angry and ran away from home to Raj’s store.
Can Joe be persuaded to come back home? Read the book for more.

My favourite part of the book was when Bob got pushed into the bins and Joe tried to help him out but the Grubbs kept and kept on bullying him and then he gave them each £50 pound to go to away but Bob didn’t want him to do that he wanted to stick up for himself but Joe just thought he was being kind and told him that £100 was nothing and he got 1 million pound for pocket money just a week! That was my favourite part because I just wanted to know more like what would happen after that and so on.
The character I liked most was Bob because he understood that life isn’t always about the money when he knew Joe was a billionaire and just took him as a normal person even though he clearly wasn’t.
My worst character in the book is Lauren because she lied to Joe and pretended to be his friend and Joe must have been really upset when he found out that she was lying to him.

I recommend this to people who like drama books and real life books and funny books because it is designed in this way.
This book is designed for children of the age about 10-11 and older no younger as it is a long book and it will take them about a year to finish.

Billionaire Boy

Billionaire boy is another book in the series of books made by David Walliams. Joe Spud is a boy aged 11. His father who is the creator of Bum Fresh toilet paper is a billionaire. Joe is a very spoilt Billionaire and is sick of his private school, because of bullying and moves to a public comprehensive school. He meets a boy called Bob whom he becomes friends with. He has things such as: F1 race cars, helicopters, crocodiles, big TV’s and every gadget in the world! However, he does not tell Bob he is a Billionaire and pays people to let Bob win things. He paid off bullies to stop bullying him. He paid people to let Bob win races. Soon enough, Bob finds out and is very angry with Joe. Then Joe’s Dad feels sorry for Joe and Pays an actress called Lauren to be his friend. She seems really nice at first. Joe didn’t know that his Dad was paying Lauren. Joe soon falls in love…

The funniest part of the book is when Joe is racing in his F1 race car on his own track and smashes it straight into a tree.
I think Joe is a realistic and well developed character that is funny, humours, hilarious.

I would recommend this book to people who are 10,11 or 12.

A book review of Shadow (Michael Morpurgo)

In the beginning Matt’s grandpa was supposed to visit Matt and his family for the holidays. However, he didn’t want to go as they had a drought and he was frightened in case Grandmas Cherrie tree died. The tree was so important to everyone because grandma planted the tree with everyone and grandma is dead now! Consequently, Matt’s grandpa suggested he should come and stay with him instead and Matt decided to come and stay with him as he loves his grandpa loads!
What will happen next? Read the book to find out!

In the beginning of Shadow, there is a really good introduction, which introduces the whole story, which will help you understand the story a bit more. My favourite character was shadow because he seemed to follow Aman were ever he went and he always came back. My least favourite characters were the security guards/police, because they took all of Amans and his mother’s money and stole grandma’s mattress, which had all the jewels and money in.

I highly recommend this book, if you like the sad and serious stories and should be read by teenagers, as it is a quit complex book! Another thing, I’d like to say is that it is very well set out and has plenty of detail in it!

The book review of Shadow (Michael Morpurgo)

In the beginning Matt’s grandpa was meant to visit every year in the summer holidays, however this time he couldn’t come because he was worried Grandmas tree would die because of the drought. Consequently, he needed to stay to water the Cherrie tree. The reason the tree is a Cherrie tree is because Grandma (who is dead) especially like the blossoms on Cherrie trees in spring. The Cherrie tree is very special to everyone because they planted it together, with grandma and pored some water on to give it a little bit of a start. Thus, when Matt phoned grandpa to persuade him to come grandpa invited him to stay with him. This is when Matt is sitting under the stars next to the cherry tree with the following people, Grandpa and dog. This is when they were sitting under the cherry tree when Matt brought up the fact that Aman is now in the prison at Yarls Wood with his mother, grandpa was very angry and asked lots of questions about “this prison place” and decides to do something about it. What happens next? Read the book and find out!

The beginning of Shadow is a very good introduction to the basic facts of the book. Although the character shadow doesn’t get introduced for a while, it slowly develops the characters by letting the story flow. Aman’s best friend (Matt) I think is a key character to this fascinating story and grandpa as well. However the writer has got a lot of characters in which makes this book very complicated. My favourite character is Shadow/Polly because she helped them get to freedom and saved them. My least favourite character is the security guards/police because they were very unkind to the asylum seekers.

I recommend this book to 12-14 year olds because the book can get complicated in some parts and have lots of words that young people won’t understand.

This book is about a boy called Joe Spud who is a billionaire and lives in a house bigger than a mansion bigger than Buckingham palace it is so big you can see it in outer space! He is spoilt rotten because his dad is the creator of ‘Bum fresh’; he has his own F1 car , race track and much much more but he is still not happy he is getting bullied at his wealthy school so he wants to go to the local school . But he didn’t want anyone to notice that he was rich so he kept quiet but then when his dad comes to school to drop of his homework he is in shock that his dad brings his helicopter and now everyone wants to be his friend but there is just one friend he wants: Bob .His dad pays a beautiful girl called Lauren to be his friend but it all goes wrong when he tries to kiss her, Joe finds out and runs away. Will Joe forgive his Dad? Will he return home?
This book is the weirdest book I’ve ever read because one minute you feel like laughing and then the next minute you feel tears swelling up in your eyes. Life mustn’t be good for Joe Spud because he is known as a selfish brat but really he has a life like any normal person. When Dad gets a girlfriend called Sapphire Joe realises that she is only in for the money he knows she isn’t the one for dad.
I would recommend this book for the ages 9 upwards as it contains some rude but funny parts in the story. Maybe even adults might like it !

Billionaire Boy By David Walliams!!!
In this story there is a boy called Joe Spud and he lives in a gigantic mansion. He is very fat and is extremely small, his dad is exactly the same as him and he has no friends around his area. Even though, children aren’t allowed to drive cars, Joe has a F1 car to go along with his very own race track. He went to a very rich school where princes went; they all bullied him and called him Bum Fresh boy! Joe decided that he wanted to go to the local comprehensive a couple of blocks away and his dad says yes. When he went to this school, he met this boy called Bob and they become the best friends. They got bullied off some people called the Grubbs and Joe pays them to be Bob’s friend and stop bulling him. His dad pays a girl called Lauren to be Joe’s friend because Bob was being horrible. He loves to eat chocolate and is spiteful! If you want to know how the story ends, you need to read it.

This story contains humorous scenarios like when he crashes into the tree and sad scenarios like when he realises he has no friends. One of my favourite humorous parts is when he crashed into the tree and one of the sad parts is when he tries to kiss Lauren and she runs home and never goes out. Another humorous part is when the Grubbs put bob in the bin and take his chocolate. His Dad’s girlfriend is called Sapphire and she is off the page 3. She wants everything and Len is stupid enough to fall for her. However, Joe is not that stupid, he hates Sapphire! She is so, so horrible to Joe. I personally hate her and if she was real I would hit her! I agree with Joe.

I would personally recommend this book to 9 year olds and upwards. This book is really good and would recommend it to anyone. It’s not my opinion that matters, it’s yours.

A book review of Shadow (Michael Morpurgo

The book has a sad start because Matt’s grandma dies. Her family plant a cherry tree in her garden. Matt’s grandpa normally went to see Matt but since there was a drought, he stayed to water the cherry tree. Aman was in prison at Yarls wood and Matt’s grandpa goes to see him with Matt. There Aman tells them about his life in Afghanistan and about shadow. Shadow is a dog that followed Aman and his mother about like their shadow, which is where he got his name from.

Shadow is a serious book about a friendship between a dog and a person and about refugees in Afghanistan. It is a sad book since many people die. It is also hart warming about how a dog can touch your hart. My favourite bit was when Shadow came because it was a happy moment. My favourite character was Shadow because she saved them.

I would recommend this book for older readers since it has got difficult words and is a complicated story.

Bills New Frock

Plot
A local boy called Bill Simpson wakes up to find himself to be a girl, His mother sprints into the room and threw the frock over his head and zips its up. He is forced to wear it to school thus he gets into lots funny situations like doing dares for a, “Whumpy Choo!” Bill has to stay still in art because he was pink and the only colour was pink. At the end of the day Bill has to walk home and go’s past the bully but the bully thought he was a beautiful girl and whistled him over but Bill whispered to the bully “ I’m not a girl I’m just Bill” Do you think Bill will keep the frock on? Read the book and find out.

I think this book was a comedy book and an original book if you’re a person who likes serious books it doesn’t matter give it a try it was very funny in some parts like when he was doing the dare for a wumpy chew.

I would recommend this for 10 years old and bellow this age If I was you I would go and buy it.

Shadow review Michel Morpurgo
Matt is a boy, which lives in Manchester, he has a friend Amah, who is a asylum seeker and has gone to yarls wood (a child jail), and he was from Kabul. Matt try’s to get his granddad to come to there but he won’t, come because his wife has died and he needs to water her tree and he has dog (his dog) . Thus matt goes to his house. Then they go to yarls wood to see Amah and his mother.
I recommend it for people like serious book and heart-warming stories. If you are under 10 I don’t recommend you read it because it is sad.
I like it because it is serious, sad and heart-warming.

Billionaire boy is a book by David Walliams who writes many good books. Joe nearly kissed a girl called Lauren but Joe ran away and she was never to be seen again. Joe’s problem is that he didn’t have many friends to play with so he was alone. Will Joe get real friends?

The funniest part for me was when Joe went in a race with his brand new shiny car and smashed it straight in the tree. I burst out laughing. I think Bob is a realistic character but Joe is a very lucky boy.
I would recommend it for 9-12 children it’s a very funny book and I enjoyed it.

Billionaire boy ,is about Joe Spud (age, 12), who is rich and lives in a mansion. He has a lot of possessions such as: a crocodile, a racing car with a track and TV and much more! He gets anything he wants at any time. However, Joe Spud is lonely because he had no friends until he meets Bob! His dad is also rich like Joe ; he made his money from his work (bum fresh)in selling toilet tissue. Joe Spud nearly kissed a girl called Lauren, but he ran away from her.
The funniest part of the book was were Joe Spud crashed into the tree when he got his new Formula racing car and his massive racing track. The saddest part was were Mr Spud and Joe Spud went BANKRUPT because Mr spuds work lost all there money.
I recommend the humours book to 7 to 13 so do miss this book because it is lifetime mistake SO FIND IT AND READ IT!

In this story there is a boy called Joe Spud, who is really rich; you can see his house form out of space. He has no friends and he is fat - his dad is exactly the same they are both fat and small. Although you’re not allowed to drive when you’re young he still does. He wants to go to a school which is not posh, because he gets bullied at the rich school. When he is driving he crashes into a tree. He lost control when he was in the car to busy looking back words. The car was fast to and it cost a lot but after that his Dad bought him a new one. He was moaning and it was annoying his Dad. Joe also was paying people so he can eventually have a friend, he has never had a friend. One person called Bob likes him because he is rich and he is sometimes kind. When he is playing he never gives his friends ago at what he is doing, he is spiteful. His best thing is chocolate that’s why he is so fat because he eats like ten bars of chocolate a day. Will Joe get and keep friends?

This story contains happiness and funniness; the bit that made me laugh, is when he crashed into the tree and when he tries to kiss Lauren. The sad thing is when he realises he has no friends because he is nasty and spiteful he never shares because he is so spoiled his Dad buys him to much like he buys sapphire to much, all she wants is money.

I would recommend this book for year five too year six that’s the youngest because it has some rude parts in. Words like: bum fresh and things like that. When there are rude words, it might not makes sense to the little ones and then they might say it too their parents.

Shadow
by Michael Morpurgo

Shadow is a depressing adventure story based around a young boy ‘Aman’ who travels from Afghanistan to England facing many dangers along the way. He is granted as an asylum seeker for 6 years until the horrid government takes away his freedom and locks him up. All along the way Shadow his companion shows the way she is a fighting young dog who always has a smile and NEVER leaves anyone behind! His mother however, doesn’t approve of Shadow she believes all dogs are scruffy rats and doesn’t like her being near him. Matt (his best friend) is annoyed by the government taking his best friend’s asylum seeker (that was granted) away from him and tries whatever he can to get him out. All that is left is hope!

The Characters are well described and their personalities are filled in this book and makes you feel like you’re making a bad decision about these poor people who look up to us for their freedom. I believe anyone who has read this book receives a different opinion upon Asylum seekers, and how they try their best to have a better life, and this story best describes their journeys as they try to get out from a war zone or just a poor country. Afghanistan at the moment is a warzone so I as a person expect there to be more people trying to flee the country to fine a new home. Shadow is a depressing book but changes minds in its path and I really enjoyed this book as it is very detailed and great to read.

I would recommend this book for 12 to 13 years olds as it may come as confusion to younger children, as there is lots of difficult language inside. Also the book is quit thick so younger children might appear to be bored as they cannot quite read it and it is very long. Now you have read my book review would you read it?

Billionaire Boy by David Walliams.

This book is concentrated on a 12 year old boy called Joe Spud who lives in a mansion that is so big it can be seen from outer space. Joe has everything a boy of his age could dream of: a racetrack, millions of pounds, a cinema, a bowling alley and lots more. Joe experiences what it is like to be a normal kid when he decides to go to a normal school in an attempt to make a friend. Joe meets a young boy called Bob who later on in the day help him let Joe win.

There are many good points in this book for example when Joe crashes his Formula 1 car into a tree while eating a larger than life mars bar. Also this is a hart warming book that makes you smile with joy like when after all the arguing between him and his dad they finally decide to call a truce and make up.

This book is one of the best books I ever read and believe me I’ve read a lot of books. Not a lot of books match the standards of this fabulous book and it is also a very good book for when you go to bed because it works it way into your dreams and it let you have a very happy night’s sleep while you think of all of having a million pounds in your pocket and are able to go to your private race track after you come home from school. Also like when you sit on one of the many chair in your cinema and watch your favourite movie without a care in the world. I would recommend this to any person that like to have a laugh. This is by far one of the best books in the world but isn’t suitable for children under the age of eight as it may be too complicated for young children and some bits are a bit rude but nothing to dramatic. There is only one thing I wish David could do to this book and that is to make it longer so that you are reading it for years and it won’t get boring because it is filled with such wonderful ideas that really capture your imagination and makes you feel like you are in the story experiencing all of the wonderful adventures that Joe has and who know maybe you could be Joes best friend and help him get through his life as a billionaire boy. And this book is definitely worth reading.

Billionaire Boy by David Walliam’s
This book is based on a young boy (Joe Spud aged 12) which is a billionaire he gets anything he desires for example: a crocodile and even Formula 1 car also a race track. However, there is one thing he has never had is a friend! Suddenly he meets a boy called Bob that doesn’t take his money for granted. Will this be the friendship he has never had?
There is many humorous parts in this story. One of the many funny parts is when Joe crashes in to a tree with his formula 1 car. But in this story it doesn’t always end with a laugh because the time of being a billionaire and having all the cash has run out. Mr Spud and his business (Bum Fresh) have gone BANKRUPT!
I recommend this humorous, but sad story to people aged 9 – 12 do not miss reading this story. You will be wowed.

I would recommend that this book is for year 5 and year 6 because, there are some very big words but is a very funny book.

Len Spud, who is Joe’s dad, gets all the money from being a toilet tissue designer called ‘Bum fresh’. Joe, who has everything, owns a racetrack, a cinema, millions of pound, a bowling alley and much more. He is paid to fight of the Grubbs who are the meanest people ever. He is doing this for his first ever friend Bob. Furthermore, a girl called Lauren is paid from Joe’s Father to be friends with Joe. He and his Father have a fall out and Joe runs away from home and if you want to know more you have got to read the book your-self. Do you think Joe Spud will return home to his beloved Father?

There are many good chapters and funny parts. The best part is when Joe Spud crashes his formula 1 car, on a straight line, into a huge tree. As well as that, I like when the Grubb’s put Bob into the trash can. This book is really good. Joe loved to eat chocolate as well as does Bob. This book is very humours and sometimes it is very heart-warming, because he meets his first friend called Bob. As well as meeting Bob he also has a good friend called Raj a newsagent who loves to sell food to Joe. Joe gets food from Raj which is out of date like 2 weeks ago. Joe always relies on Raj to get through anything that gets in Joe’s way.

These books are one of my top 5 books and believe me I have read loads of books. I like this book because it is written by a humorous person [David Walliams] and the book is humorous as well as the author. Not a lot of books have a good standard as this book it is well checked and no mistakes. I think this book is funny because the author is actually a comedian. I recommend this book for people the age of ten and over its not so suitable for under tens. I like the part were Joe Spud crashes his formula one car on a straight line and he crashes it into a big and huge tree which has been there for generations. Len Spuds business working as a tissue guy is actually not as hard as over people would think. I recommend if you like funny books definitely read this book and write a review like I have done. The book is sometimes very serious the way I see it however to you it might not be. It is definitely worth reading this book.

Bill’s new frock

Plot.
This book is about a boy that turns into a girl, he is called Bill. He lives with his mam, dad and his cat. One morning he wakes up and sees that he is a girl, the next thing he knows he has a frock on him. The frock is pink with white frills on it. On his way to school that day his worst enemy comes around the corner and he is shocked that he doesn’t punch him, and instead he wolf whistles at him. The bully is called Malcolm. Bill was so surprised that his enemy whistled at him. Will Bill choose to stay as a girl or choose to go back to being a boy . Well just read the book and find out.

What I think.

I think that this story is amazing, because it is realistic, it describes a lot. It describes: what the dress looks like, what the boy is called, who is in the family, who is the bully, how people reacted and what Bill’s choice was, if he chose to be a girl or go back to being a boy.
I would recommend this book for ages 10-12 years old,
because it is easy to read, and I just love it. It is a hilarious and amusing story about a boy who gets a taste of a life as a girl. I recommend this to boys so they know how it feels to be a girl.

Shadow review Michal murpurgo

Shadow is a desperate adventure story about a young boy and his family who are trying to travel from Afghanistan to England. The young boy is called Aman. All of them are suffering an awful life in Afghanistan and want a better life in England. Aman meets a springer spaniel which is unwell. Aman looks after it and calls him Shadow. They immediately become friends and have a close bond. He has many adventures travelling to England where he has relatives. Once there, he makes a friend called Matt. However, Aman and his mother are sent to jail before being ordered back to Afghanistan. Matt and his grandpa decide to help them and set up a protest outside of Yarls Wood jail to get the family released.

I like this book because it was both sad and serious. My best character was Shadow the dog because he was brave and loyal and stood by Aman through difficult times. It is full of action about their journey. I loved the bit where they were set upon by robbers and all their things were stolen.

This book is aimed for children aged between 12 and 13. It made me feel different because it asks serious questions about asylum seekers. It has made me feel different about how some people are suffering around the world who don’t have a good life. Although it is sad in places, it’s a great read!

Bill’s new frock

It’s about a boy called Bill, he turns into a girl when he wakes up and his mum walks in and shoved a frock other his head not giving him time to argue. He walked to school that day he saw his enemy standing on the wall who bullies bill, he didn’t realise bill was now a girl in a frock. The bully was called mean Malcom when bill walked past him then mean Malcom wolf whistle instead of giving him bruises by kicking him.
My favourite part was when Malcom wolf whistled at bill. I also loved the part when he woke up and he was a girl and his mum came in and put a frock over his head.
I think everyone would like this book because it is a fun and funny book to read. They will really enjoy it.

Bills new frock by Anne Fine
Bill Simpson wakes up and finds out he is a girl! Then before he can tell anyone his mam comes in and stuffs a unknown frock over his head and then once he has went down stairs his cat doesn’t notice any difference about bill she stills curls around his ankles as usual. When he leaves the house mean Malcolm does that annoying whistle what people do when they are in love YUCK!!!
When he gets to school Malcolm was late the Head Teacher was at the gates he says to Malcolm “GET INTO SCHOOL NOW!!!” but when bill got there bill was worried that he was going to get wrong but he never the Teacher he just said “hurry now you don’t want to be late for school do we dear” he took him with no warning. When they got into assembly the Head Teacher choose two people to take a table to the lower school one of the girl’s complaint he always picks the boys!

My favrite part of the book was when the old granny takes him away from the bully’s and they walk along the road together.
This book I think my be for about people in year 3 to year 6 and it is a really great book.

Book Review - Billionaire Boy by David Walliams

12 year-old Joe Spud couldn’t be happier. He has everything he could ever dream of. Literally. When Joe receives 2 million pounds for his birthday, he rejects it and asks for a friend instead. He lives in a mansion with his Father. One evening, his Father goes out to a nightclub with a woman named Sapphire and he is fooled into buying her whatever she demanded. When Joe tries to kiss a girl named Lauren, she tells him the truth and runs home not returning.. When he leaves his posh St. Cuthbert’s school for the local comprehensive school, he meets Bob and immediately realises they will be friends.

This story contains humorous scenes, heart-warming scenes and scenes that just make you want to cry. The funny scenes: Joe crashes his Formula One car into a tree, he buys a crocodile, when he tries to kiss Lauren and many more fascinating scenes. If you want to find out more about Billionaire Boy, read the book.

I would recommend this book for the ages 10-adults. The reason for this is because it has complicated words and phrases that may not make sense to the littler ones. You will find this book in the local library or good book shops around the North East!
